Based off of one of the most exceptional east coast beers (in our humble opinion) on the market, this double IPA recipe instantly became one of our favorite ingredient kits! Our version of a Heady Topper clone recipe is packed with almost a pound of hops, and is definitely a beer that will have hopheads in hopheaven.
One of the first things we noticed when pouring this beer into the pint glass was the aroma. With a dry hop addition consisting of Apollo, Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe®, and Amarillo® hops, we weren't necessarily surprised. Impressed is more like it. A balanced malt profile helps to tame the bitterness, allowing the hop flavor and aroma to be the true star in this recipe.
If you're a fan of IPAs, double IPAs, or anything having to do with hops, this is one beer you need to brew!

Jonathan Plise has been making beer since the year 2000 - his first batch being a porter that was less than drinkable. He then spent the next few years researching and developing his recipes, fermentation regimen, and sanitation - Jonathan's most dramatic improvements came when he learned about oxygen and yeast starters. In 2006 he was awarded California Homebrewer of the Year sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
Jonathan's Munich Helles is rich and complex. The malt is upfront and smooth, while being anchored by the low hop additions. He has won 9 awards with this recipe, including one Best of Show and a Gold at the NHC in 2005. Jonathan recommends White Labs WLP833 German Bock Yeast.

An amazing IPA derived from one of our favorites, the I Heart IPA is a true Centennial hop bomb! Using Centennial as the bittering, aroma, and dry hop additions gives you a true understanding of how incredible and universal this hop can be.
Light in color and body, the malt character hides a little, allowing the burst of Centennial flavor and aroma shine. Our Bell's Two Hearted clone recipe has a slightly lower original gravity than the original. Coming in at right around 6% ABV, this isn't one of those IPAs that will make you shy away from a second!

The original Double IPA! Vinnie Cilurzo began homebrewing in 1989 while in college. In 1994 Vinnie started the Blind Pig Brewing Company in Temecula, CA, a small, low-budget micro-brewery known for their extremely hoppy IPA—an IPA which won silver medals at both the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. Vinnie sold his share in Blind Pig and was hired to manage and brew at the Russian River Brewing Company, a start-up brewery by Korbel Champagne in Guerneville, CA. In late 2002 Korbel decided to get out of the beer business and sold the Russian River name and brand to Vinnie who moved the brewery to Santa Rosa, CA, 90 miles North of San Francisco, where he and his wife Natalie opened a brew-pub which serves delicious bites and, of course, all of the Russian River Ales. Vinnie has won 10 awards at the Great American Beer Festival in just six years and was named Small Brewing Company Brewmaster of the Year in 1999. Russian River's smashing success continues to this day, expanding and opening a second brewery in Windsor, CA. Almost every beer that Vinnie makes commercially started out as a homebrew recipe at one point or another. Even as a professional brewer, Vinnie still homebrews at least 5 or 6 times a year.
This is the original homebrew recipe that was the basis for Blind Pig IPA which won Silver Medals at the World Cup of Beer and the Great American Beer Festival in 1996, the last year Vinnie brewed it. Two dry hop additions along with 1 oz of American Oak are added directly to the fermenter after the first week of fermentation. To say it is a very unique, extremely flavorful IPA is an understatement. Vinnie recommends using White Labs California yeast, WLP001.

Also referred to as a pumpkin beer recipe, our famous Thanksgiving Ale is based on an Amber Ale with modest bittering, a mild hop finish, and of course the subtle flavor of pumpkin spice. Not overpowering in the spice, it is a great beer to share with both experienced and novice beer lovers. Show up at Thanksgiving with a case of your own pumpkin spiced beer and your in-laws may just change their mind about you... normally you can't buy that kind of love.

There are certain beers that you can't help but associate with a specific time of year, and there might be no better example than Sierra Nevada's Celebration IPA. As the year begins to wind down and we enter the holiday season, our eyes instinctively start scanning the shelves for those striking red labels. Once you've enjoyed that first pint of Sierra's signature seasonal release, it's hard to resist leaning into the holiday spirit. Sierra brews this recipe every year with their most recent haul of fresh, hand-selected hops, making each release slightly unique to past iterations. Even though our clone kit doesn't contain fresh hops, we strived to make a recipe that celebrates the character of Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops with heaps of citrus, piney, and floral notes.
Our Holiday Hops kit is a classic West Coast IPA with a distinct, but balanced malt character, deep reddish color and plenty of hop bitterness to match the bite of winter weather. Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops are employed up and down the brew schedule, from the top of the 90-minute boil to the final dry hop addition days before packaging. We highly recommend using a Chico yeast strain for fermentation—it's a Sierra Nevada ale recipe after all!

MoreBeer! is proud to release this Black IPA recipe designed by our local homebrew Club DOZE. This black IPA recipe has been coined the name as 'Diablo Dark Ale' in honor of our resident Mt. Diablo. Here is where the Diablo Order of Zymurical Enthusiasts brew at the foothills fine tuning their homebrew recipes and sharing their passion for making great beer at home.
After winning the AHA Homebrew Club Of The Year in 2010, the Diablo Order Of Zymiracle Enthusiasts (DOZE) put their minds together to collectively craft a beer they felt representative of the club and its brewers. The initiative was taken on as an all club project that spanned 5 months. In the end, over 50 members contributed ideas to this recipe and nearly 40 individual batches brewed by 23 DOZE members were tasted and refined to a single recipe. This beer is inspired by the style many refer to as Cascadian Dark Ale or Black IPA, however it is not intended to fit the mold of any particular guideline. Mostly it is big, dark, hoppy, and delicious.

Looking for the perfect Pale Ale to share with friends this summer? Do you like a Pale Ale with a rich malt flavor and a ton of hop character but without an overwhelming bitterness? Then the Pale Ale II should be your next brew.
We took our American Pale recipe and upped the malt, threw a ton of hops in the finish for flavor, but kept the bitterness the same. We think toning down the perceived bitterness is one reason we consistently get great reviews from brewers sharing this with friends.
Keeping it real: Part of the success of this kit is blending a lot of Willamette and Cascade hops in the finish. This isn't a wild, new or crazy idea... this is old school. Cascade and Willamette were the hops that helped put craft brewing on the map in the 1980's. The reason they are still so popular... they make a damn good beer. We like damn good beer. And yes we like to wear our Sperry Topsiders and listen to Van Halen when we drink this (note if you were born in the 80's ignore this comment).

This Scotch Ale recipe is a huge, malty beer with a deep rich copper color. Scotch Ales have a flavor a little reminiscent of single malt Scotch with smoky overtones and roasted flavors. With a 1.075 to 1.080 starting gravity and 24 IBU of bitterness, it is distinctly malty, but not cloying like some Scotch Ale recipes. Scotch Ale strains typically ferment well down to 60 degrees and leave behind very few esters or fruity flavors, emphasizing the malt.

Jim was looking for a dark, smooth, creamy mouth feel stout just like an Australian stout he had tasted years ago. Over the years, Jim found a clone that was close but needed some small changes. After many trials and test batches, he came up with this recipe that is very drinkable when it is fresh. It will get smoother with a couple months of aging and creaminess added by the lactose makes this a very good winter warming stout. Jim hopes you enjoy this beer as much as he has. Based off of one of the most exceptional east coast beers (in our humble opinion) on the market, this double IPA instantly became one of our favorite ingredient kits! Our version of a Heady Topper clone recipe is packed with almost a pound of hops, and is definitely a beer that will have hopheads in hopheaven.
One of the first things we noticed when pouring this beer into the pint glass was the aroma. With a dry hop addition consisting of Apollo, Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe®, and Amarillo® hops, we weren't necessarily surprised. Impressed is more like it. A balanced malt profile helps to tame the bitterness, allowing the hop flavor and aroma to be the true star in this recipe.

Dark Hill Porter is a tribute to one of our favorite west coast porters. This Black Butte Porter clone, commercially brewed by Deschutes Brewery in Oregon, is one of the most well-rounded porters out there. Being bittered with Bravo hops helps to initially balance the malty backbone, but that bitterness fades quickly, providing a smooth transition into the complex flavors of four different steeping grains. Contrary to its name, Ugly Fish IPA is actually one of the most beautiful beers we have to offer! Designed as a clone of the highly sought-after Ballast Point Sculpin® IPA, the Ugly Fish IPA is a hop masterpiece. This beer starts with a very clean bitterness from Warrior® hops, and finishes with a beautiful blend of Cascade, Simcoe®, and Chinook late additions. With almost 10 ounces of hops, the Ugly Fish IPA is definitely a hop forward beer, but does have a solid malt profile that stands up to those hops and helps to keep it reasonably balanced.

We have been a fan of John Palmer ever since his book, "How to Brew" hit our shelves way back when. After meeting him at a few gatherings here and there, and after recommending his book hands down over any other, we decided to try and add John to our Signature Series line-up. When he agreed, we knew we would get something special from him, and he did not disappoint. John describes his kit as: "a smooth, copper lager that strikes the perfect balance between a toasty sweet malt body and the noble overtures of the hops. This interpretation of the Vienna style has more hop flavor dancing around the edges than the current BJCP guidelines specify, but the hop profile really complements the rich malt palate for a lively complexity that you don't get from the hoppier Bohemian Pilsener or maltier Oktoberfest styles, and is richer and smoother than Dortmunder Export." MoreHaze! is a delicious, juicy, NE style double IPA. This beer was brewed as a collaboration between EJ Phair Brewing Co. and MoreBeer! We liked the beer so much that we wanted people to be able to brew it at home.
The beer is very high in alcohol (9.1% ABV), low in bitterness, light in color and loaded with hops. We dry hopped this beer in multiple stages, added lots of high protein grains and did not use any clarifying agents, which leads to a hazy beer loaded with flavor. Flavor and aroma is very citrusy (orange, tangerine, grapefruit) and mildly danky. The large addition of wheat and oats adds a soft, pillowy texture to the beer. The feed back was that this beer is delicious and dangerously easy to drink at such a high ABV.

A very unique Belgian Ale. This recipe has moderate bitterness from early kettle additions of Saaz hops. This beer is spiced with Bitter Orange Peel and Coriander which lends a surprisingly pleasant flavor and aroma. The grain bill includes Oats and Flaked Barley which when combined with a very special non-flocculating yeast leaves a cloudy, almost white appearance. Hence the name wit which means white. This is a very refreshing style that has a light, crisp flavor. There are some phenolic flavors as well, like you would find in some Belgian Abbey Ales and even German Hefeweizen. Hoegarden or Celis White would be some commercial examples that represent this style.

Jamil brews more, consistenly high-quality beer than any hombrewer we know. He won California Homebrewer of the Year in 2002, after winning over 150 total awards at brewing competitions, 55 of them being FirstPlace. Of all the beers that he brews, the Chocolate Hazlenut Porter (CHP, as Jamil says) is the cult favorite and the recipe he is asked-for the most.
