  • GrainFather Conical - Pro Edition

    Grainfather GF30 Conical Fermenter | 7 gal.

    5 reviews

PLEASE NOTE: The supplier of this product has temporarily halted shipments to addresses within the state of California. If you are a CA resident, please note your order will not be fulfilled and will ultimately be canceled. We hope to have this issue resolved with the supplier as soon as possible. The Grainfather GF30 Conical Fermenter has built-in wireless control, so you can control and monitor fermentation from anywhere!  The GF30 Conical Fermenter gives brewers more flexibility and freedom during fermentation than ever before! Connect the built-in wireless controller to the internet and the Grainfather App, add fermentation tracking devices and control/monitor fermentation from anywhere!   The GF30 Conical Fermenter allows you to dump yeast, take samples and transfer your wort via our innovative, dual function, valve design. Partner it with the Grainfather GC4 Glycol Chiller and get full control over the heating and cooling of your unit. Features: Double Walled: A stainless steel double walled skin is filled with a thick layer of polyurethane foam for insulation. This is what keeps the wort at a constant stable temperature with minimal influence from any external environmental temperature changes, providing insulation for your fermentation that a standard jacket cannot achieve. Integrated Gentle Heating: In the cavity of the fermenter between the outer body and cone sits a 30 Watt, 12V heating element. Unlike standard heating elements/sources that directly heat the liquid, this heat source is designed to heat the environment in between the walls of the fermenter, which in turn heats the liquid. It is similar to controlling the temperature in a temperature-controlled room. The fermenter acts as an artificial environment that can be heated, meaning the temperature is raised in an even and controlled manner which is much better for the yeast.  Integrated Cooling Sleeve: In between the two stainless steel walls sits a cooling sleeve (also made of stainless steel). This cooling sleeve is welded onto the inner wall of the fermenter and can be hooked up to the additionally purchased Glycol Chiller. Temperature is dialed into the Temperature Controller and as the cooling liquid travels through this sleeve, it cools the stainless steel which in turn evenly cools the beer in the fermenter. The cooling sleeve never comes into contact with the beer, it is completely concealed, built into the fermenter, and never needs cleaning or sanitizing - a true innovation for a fermenter of this scale. Easy Access to the Interior for Hassle-Free Cleaning: The Grainfather Conical Fermenter has a smooth interior with no additions such as cooling coils or additional sampling valves meaning it is easy to clean and minimizes the risk of infection. Golden Angle Conical: The conical shape of the fermenter is typical for professional breweries. Our conical has been designed with the 'Golden Angle' of 60º. This is the optimum angle for yeast and sediment to drop down to the bottom of the cone without getting stuck to the sides, allowing you to transfer from above the sediment line, resulting in clearer beer. The conical shape also allows for better mixing during fermentation due to the path of convention currents that it enables to occur.  Dual Valve Tap: Make the yeast dumping, transferring and sampling process more professional with this innovative all in one valve. Sampling and transferring is done through an inlet above the sediment line, allowing for clear, sediment-free beer. Easily collect your yeast from below the sediment line with the same unique valve for recultivating and pitching. The innovative design of the valve allows for this dual functionality and less cleaning for you. Support: The Grainfather Conical Fermenter is fully supported around the world by a fantastic support team who love brewing just as much as you do. Our support team is here for any technical inquiries on brewing or how the Conical Fermenter works, as well as general customer service inquiries. All Grainfather Conical Fermenters come with a 24-month warranty. 1 review

Upgrade standard and Plus model X-Series conicals with increased cooling performance Chill down to cold crashing temps when used with glycol and insulation; compatible with any vessel with a 4" T.C. opening Keg Connects and Floating Racking Buoy enable you to pressure transfer the clearest beer at the top of your fermenter 1.5" tri-clamp ferrule for use with additional T.C. accessories like the Pressure Fermentation Kit or Hop Bong Sanitary all stainless steel construction with 3/8" OD inlet/outlet for glycol connection Upgrade your standard model X-series conical with the ultimate in-solution chilling coil—the BrewBuilt Ludicrous Coil! Temperature control is one of the most important aspects of a healthy, happy fermentation. When your fermenting beer gets too hot, the yeast will likely impart off-flavors that can easily overwhelm the taste of your finished beer. The Ludicrous Coil offers a ludicrous amount of surface area (which means more cooling capacity) compared to other chilling coils you'll find. Not only does it manage your fermentation temperature with ease, the Ludicrous Coil has the capacity to chill beer to cold crashing temperatures when used with glycol and insulation. A truly unparalleled unit when it comes to in-solution chilling. You will also need a cold water source to provide the cooling solution. For maintaining ale temperatures, a cooler or bucker of ice water is sufficient in most cases and this method works well with the BrewBuilt Chiller Pump Kit. For maintaining lager temperatures or cold crashing, we recommend the IceMaster Max 2 Glycol Chiller and the Insulated Tubing Set. Sanitary all stainless steel construction with 3/8" OD inlet/outlet. Compatible with 3/8" ID flexible tubing & hose clamps or 9.5mm Duotight adapter. Specifications: Size Coil Height Float Tubing Length 7/14 Gal 18.5" 24" 27 Gal 24" 30" 38 Gal 33" 39"

  • Low stock! Thermowell - 15" Long w/ Hood for Smooth Neck Carboys

Hood Thermowell For Smooth Neck Carboys - 15 in.

    5 reviews

This carboy thermowell is used in conjunction with a Digital Controller, FE601, FE601A, FE602, or FE611, to more accurately regulate internal temperature during fermentation. It is exceptionally useful during the start of fermentation when the lag between ambient temperature in the refrigerator and actual temperature in the carboy can vary greatly. Now you can keep your beer or wine within one degree of the set point on your digital controller. Designed to fit 3, 5,6, and 6.5 gallon glass smooth neck carboys, as well as 5 and 6 gallon plastic carboys, the unit comes with a 15" stainless steel thermowell and a carboy hood that will accommodate a standard airlock or 1/2 inch blow off tubing. Will not work with the Analog Johnson Temperature Controller (FE600) because the probe is too large.  This unit has been redesigned to work with 2016 Ranco Probes. TIP: Carboy hoods are exceptionally useful for blowoff tubes. Just add 3' of 1/2" racking tubing into a bucket of water as your airlock. Inner Diameter of Thermowell: Slightly larger than 1/4"

  • Johnson A421 Digital Temperature Controller (Wired)

Johnson Digital Temperature Controller - Wired

    7 reviews

The Johnson digital temperature controller is used to control the temperature of a refrigerator, or similar cooling or heating device. Enter your desired temperature, called set point, and how tightly you want your temperature maintained, called differential, and let the controller do the rest. Ranco Vrs. Johnson  This Johnson digital temperature controller is very similar to our popular Ranco brand controller (FE610) in application and appearance. The advantage of the Ranco is being able to switch between cooling and and heating from the digital interface, while with the Johnson you have to take the cover off and physically remove a jumper. The advantage of the Johnson is the very attractive price. For technical aficionados the Johnson does have a feature called Anti-Short Cycle Delay. Cycling is the rapid turning off and on of an electrical device. Over time cycling can harm your appliance. The Johnson controller allows you to set a time interval, in minutes, that keeps the controller from turning on right after it shuts off no matter what the temperature reading is. This can be very useful when you are using a 1 degree of differential setting for tight control but want your compressor or power supply to have a minimum time period of rest before it turns back on. Temperature Range of -40 to 212F.

  • BevBright Pleated PES Filter (10 in.) - High Efficiency 0.45 Micron Absolute BevBright Pleated PES Filter (10 in.) - High Efficiency 0.45 Micron Absolute

    BevBright® Beverage Filter - 0.45 Micron (Sterile)

    3 reviews

High quality, absolute rated .45 micron absolute filter with a hard caged body and gasketed ends. Thermally bonded end caps and ultrasonic welded media seams for a one piece construction. Absolute rated at 99.99% efficiency to remove bacteria for sterile filtering. Ideal for filtering white wine that has not completed a full malolactic fermentation. Filters meet FDA Title 21 regulations for beverage contact. Will work with our 10 inch cannister filter. What makes this filter really unique is the PES layer membrane with defined .45 micron hole size. This layer will not allow material to pass that is over .45 in size. This PES layer is also what makes this cartridge considerably more expensive than spun poly filters. Some cartridage filters are listed as being absolute but unless they have a PES layer they aren't. Wine to be filtered should already be very clear as this filter will load up quickly with material. It is a common practice to prefilter already settled wine with a 1 micron spun poly filter and then filter with this .45 micron absolute filter. Please note: these filters are not intended to be reusable.

  • Chugger T.C. Pump - High Temperature Stainless Steel - X-Dry - Inline Chugger T.C. Pump - High Temperature Stainless Steel - X-Dry - Inline

X-Dry Series Tri-Clamp Chugger Pump (Inline) - Stainless Steel

    1 review

Introducing the X-Dry Series Chugger Pumps! These pumps offer the same great quality we've come to expect from Chugger, but now feature Run-Dry Protection. Although the Chugger still needs to be primed before each use, the X-Dry Series offers a new level of protection from damage due to cavitation. The Chugger lineup of pumps represents a great value for an even better price. These pumps are workhorses in the brewery. Featuring a robust flow rate of 7 gpm, and a magnetic drive designed to handle back-pressure, these pumps are a great addition to any brewing setup! The Stainless Steel Chugger showcases their molded Stainless Steel Pump Head. This stainless pump is a steal for the price, and we've been more than happy with the quality! Use this to ease transfers between kettles, cool wort via a counterflow chiller, or recirculate icewater for quicker chilling! The Chugger pump model has 1.5" tri-clamp inlet and outlet, allowing easy integration with your T.C. kettles or fermenter! We recommend setting these pumps up with a butterfly valve on the outflow side, this way you can throttle down the outgoing flow rate, allowing for more efficient sparges or cooling! The pump head can also be rotated 360° (in 90° intervals) allowing for even more customization! Features: Run Dry Carbon Bearing Stainless Steel Inline Pump Head Food Grade up to 250° F 1.5" tri-clamp inlet and outlet High Flow rate of 7 gpm Max Head 18.6 ft 115v 55" cord and plug attached 50/60 Hz, 1.4 amp 1/20 HP, 3500 RPM Note: When using silicone tubing, we recommend using a slighlty larger barb than the I.D. of the tubing. This is because silicone tubing tends to have greater pliability than most tubing. For example, when using 1/2" silicone tubing, we recommend our 5/8" barb (H620), to help ensure a better seal!

LinkTech High Temp Plastic Male Quick Disconnect (QD) | 1/2" MPT W/ Shutoff Valve

    1 review

The LinkTech 60PS Series is a lineup of premium plastic Quick Disconnects.  These High Quality QDs are made from medical grade polypropylene, a high-strength plastic that is temperature tolerant 160° (Max!), and can handle pressure ranging from a vacuum to 60 psi. All of the 60PS Series will interconnect, and these units will also work seamlessly (and leaklessly!) with CPC Quick Disconnects of the same internal 3/8” flow path.  O-rings are a EPDM Rubber, and internal valve springs are constructed from 316 Stainless steel. This is a Male Plug, which can connect to any H501 Series Female Socket.  It has 1/2" Male NPT threading for use with any products equipped with 1/2" Female NPT.  This QD is equipped with a shutoff valve.   When not connected to another QD, this will not allow any flow.  While not quite as bulletproof as our Stainless Steel Quick Disconnects, this lineup does offer a few advantages.  These can be set up with Shutoffs, which will prevent flow when disconnected, and can be incredibly useful on Pump or Glycol systems.  The pricing of these products is more economical, yet the plastic is still medical grade.  All in all, these are a premium lineup of quick disconnects with great features and lots of options. Features: LinkTech brand 60PS Series Equipped with Shutoff Valve Connections: Male Plug Quick Disconnect 1/2" MPT Medical Grade Materials: Body: High-Strength Polypropylene Spring: 316 Stainless Steel O-Ring: EPDM Operating Pressure: Vacuum to 60 PSI Temperature Tolerance: -40 to 280°F (-40 to 138°C) 3/8" Flow Path Interchangeable with CPC - Colder HFC35 Series

  • Banjo Burner Banjo Burner

Banjo Burner - High Pressure Propane

    9 reviews

This cast iron wide-profile banjo burner is strong and efficient, topping our ratings in getting wort to a quick boil, while using the same amount or less of propane. Adjusted for efficiency this banjo burner produces around 70,000 BTU/hr, and in full, this banjo burner mode produces 100,000 btu. Banjo burners can often times have issues when using with low flame output. We sourced and tested a number of different units, before settling on this one, which performs great at low output. Uses 3/8" male flare fitting (included). Comes with steel orifice plate for regulating airflow The burner has a 9 7/8" diameter and is 14 3/4" long This banjo burner requires a propane regulator to function properly. We recommend a Wind Guard with these units if brewing outdoors. If using indoors, you must have proper ventilation in the form of an overhead cooking hood.

  • Ss Brewtech - Motorized Grain Mill Ss Brewtech - Motorized Grain Mill

    Ss Brewtech Grain Mill

    7 reviews

The Ss Grain Mill sports an all-in-one design, featuring a hi-torque DC motor combined with a leveraged gear reduction system that drives a series of billet aluminum pulleys and high inertia rollers that make easy work of the toughest wheat and rye malts — Capable of up to 350 lb/h  Differential Speed Rollers Dating back to the early days of craft brewing, feed mills were often repurposed in breweries due to the lack of availability of milling equipment designed specifically for processing malt in brewing applications.  Conversely, in a home brew settling, corona mills, and other repurposed mill designs intentioned for processing raw grain in a home kitchen were adopted for their ease and accessibility.   Naturally, if you're feeding livestock or making grits, you typically want to pulverize the grain.  However, if you're brewing beer it’s preferable to crack the endosperm in several places and then sheer off the husk, keeping it mostly intact.  This shearing and crushing action maximizes both efficiency and lautering performance, reducing or eliminating the need for rice hulls or other lautering aids. The two rollers inside the Ss Grain Mill are both driven by the onboard motor, but designed to rotate at different speeds. This key feature is at the heart of our purpose built mill designed for home and pro brewing.   Machined Fluted Stainless Steel Rollers Other mills that are designed to pulverize grain, often rely on hardened steel knurled rollers to extend their usable life.  The shearing action of the Ss Grain Mill places less stress on the roller to effectively process the grain. We settled on the more professional approach of fluting the rollers, which enhances the ability for the two rollers to engage the malt and effectively shear the husk from the endosperm.  It was also important to us that this mill be functional in either a home or pro-environment, so we decided to cast the rollers in solid 304 stainless steel, with each roller weighing a robust 7.5 lbs.   Furthermore, the profile of the rollers has been completely rethought.  Most small mills rely on a wide processing envelope and a small, 1.5-2” diameter roller.  We have emulated the design of large production mills, and increased the diameter of the roller to 4”, and narrowed the processing envelope.  This design increases the rotating mass, and stores rotational energy, which ultimately helps to smooth abrupt changes in rotational speed.  Furthermore, the entrance angle is less aggressive with a larger roller, resulting in additional mechanical advantage.   Precision Gap Adjustment Eleven points of adjustment ranging from 0.5mm to 2.0mm open up a wide range of malt products. Gap adjustments are tool-less and can be made without any disassembly, or complicated procedures.   Extruded Aluminum Chassis The two piece extruded 6061 aluminum chassis promotes structural rigidity resulting in a more precise degree of roller alignment.  This is important to retaining consistent roller gap settings from batch-to-batch. Furthermore, the two-piece construction isolates the motor and rollers in separate chambers, preventing the motor and drivetrain from accumulating dust and debris. All rotational pulleys, and rollers have their own dedicated fully sealed ball bearings for low drag and long life.   25 lb. Hopper Capacity  The Ss Mill will include a custom tooled 4mm thick ABS hopper that is both structurally strong and lightweight. Designed to hold up to 25 lbs. of grain at a time, the Ss Grain Mill has been clocked in prototype testing at processing roughly 350 lbs. per hour of barley malt.  Which is roughly a 50 lb. sack every 8 mins, making it perfect for batch sizes from 5 gallons to 5 BBLs.   Features: All-In-One Design Differential Speed Rollers Machined Fluted Stainless Steel Rollers Precision Gap Adjustment Extruded Aluminum Chassis Specs: 350 lb/h 25 lb Hopper 0.5 - 2.0mm Gap Range 18" Width x 19.5" Height x 9" Depth Plugs into standard 110 volt wall socket. Please note: This mill is designed for use with brewing grains only. It will not work for cracking whole kernel corn.

  • MaltZilla Motorized Grain Mill (24v) MaltZilla Motorized Grain Mill (24v)

MaltZilla Motorized Grain Mill w/ Premium Diamond Rollers

    5 reviews

KegLand put an exceptional amount of time into the research, testing, and development of the MaltZilla, and what they came up with is a motorized grain mill unlike anything we've seen before. It features an integrated motor so you'll never have to mess with a hand crank or power drill to spin the rollers. And the rollers themselves are made with a diamond-impregnated surface that offers superior performance and longevity compared to conventional knurled steel rollers. The integrated 24V motor is powerful enough to chew through popping corn kernels with ease, and works on voltages from 12-30V DC. The higher the voltage the faster the rollers spin, although we recommend 24V for optimum speed and grist results. The unit does not come with a power supply. When purchasing the unit, you have the option of pairing it with either a power supply with 110V plug (CAN11), or with a 6 ft. long cord with Anderson plug and alligator clips (CAN102). The power supply is straight forward, and allows you to plug the unit into a standard 110V power socket. The alligator clips give you the option to power the unit from a battery. Knurled Steel vs. Diamond Coated Rollers Your run-of-the-mill grain mills are often manufactured with steel rollers with a knurled finish. The knurling helps grip and pull the grain through the rollers, but even the knurling on hardened steel will go blunt eventually and hinder the mill's performance. Some manufacturers attempt to solve this problem by using geared rollers to better grab the grain, or add a third roller to the mill so the first two rollers with a larger gap force the grain into the third roller. These are only workarounds to the real issue—all steel rollers will go blunt eventually, especially if used with hard grains like wheat or corn. In a commercial setting, it’s not uncommon to send the rollers off to a metalworking factory to re-sharpen and re-knurl, but this is an expensive, time-consuming hassle. Many homebrew-scale users might just end up throwing the mill away and purchasing a new one. The MaltZilla Diamond Mill is quite a different mill design, and it’s the first in the world to use diamonds impregnated into the surface of the roller. Even after many tons of grain are processed through the mill, the diamond surface will stay just as sharp as it was on day one. The sharpness of the diamonds draws grain exceptionally well, and even when hard grains are used the diamond rollers won't dull or slip in performance. Sheer Instead of Chop Most mills require aggressive knurling to push into the grain and “chop” the grain as it passes through a tight gap, which means your grains are often chopped in half. The MaltZilla works on a different principle and gap setting is not as critical. The MaltZilla uses impregnated diamonds to grip the surface of the kernel and the friction of pulling the grain through the gap causes a sheering action. When set up correctly, the sheering action can leave the entire husk intact, reducing the chance of stuck sparge and improve efficiency, while still opening the husk enough that the entire contents of the kernel is available to the mashing process. The 70 mm diameter rollers are double the diameter of many other mills, which significantly improves the crush and assists in drawing the grain in more effectively. Integrated Motor You generally would not purchase a car without an engine, so why would you purchase a grain mill without a motor? Milling grain has an optimum RPM— too slow and it will take you a long time, too fast and you will end up with excessive powder. Hand cranking can be a pain in the backside, especially with larger grain bills, and using a power drill doesn't offer much in the way of speed control and adds the potential risk of burning out your drill. The MaltZilla has an integrated motor with a very constant RPM putting out optimum RPM with an integrated gearbox. The high torque and sealed construction make it ideal for a brewing environment, as the motor is well protected from moisture and grain dust. The motor is seamlessly integrated into the side body of the mill. Being DC, the motor is safer than higher voltage AC, especially in an environment where splashing and hose spray are commonplace. The DC motor is also reversible so the direction of spin can be changed based on the polarity. This is particularly useful for over-mount and under-mount installation. Over-Mount and Under-Mount Installation Traditionally, homebrew mills just sit on a board where they are moved from one bucket to another. The MaltZilla has multiple different mounting configurations. It can be over-mounted to a board like most mills are, but if you want a seamless finish to your garage/brewing area, you can mount the mill under your counter where it’s concealed and out of the way. Simply lift up a small opening in the top of your benchtop, drop in your hopper, pour in grain and run the mill. When you're done, remove the hopper and conceal the opening. There is also a MaltZilla PPE Base Board available for over the bucket installation or designing your own mill stand. Grain Hopper This unit does not come with a grain hopper. We recommend using a large funnel with a shortened spout, or a repurposed gallon-sized water bottle. The MaltZilla Aluminum Hopper is currently in development and available for pre-order. Specifications: Power: 12-30V DC Anderson Connector Plug Grain Inlet ID: 2-3/16" Grain Inlet OD: 2-3/8" Weight: 11 lbs KegLand Part Number: KL15776 Please note: This mill is designed for use with brewing grains only. It will not work for cracking whole kernel corn.

Beer Brewing Equipment Collection Article +

Home Brewing Beer Making beer at home is easy, rewarding and can lead to some amazing friendships & interactions. Like most people I started brewing at home with beer brewing kit from MoreBeer! The kit came with everything I needed to brew a batch of beer at home. Typical of most homebrewing starter kits, the equipment and beer recipe ingredients where for extract brewing. I know a lot of people that just dived right into all-grain brewing and there is nothing wrong with that approach. For myself and what I recommend to others as well is starting with extract brewing. It allows you to focus on a few steps in the brewing process as you are essentially starting from the boil. I think the old saying crawl, walk, run applies beautifully to learning to brew and most anything in life. By starting with extract you can focus on, in my opinion the two most important things in brewing; cleaning / sanitation and fermentation. Not to say can’t jump into all grain brewing and give these topics the respect they deserve. It’s just a lot easier to focus on and learn a few things at a time. After all you don’t eat an entire pizza at once, you have one slice at a time. Once you have brewed a few batches of extract beer a good natural progression is to try what they call a mini-mash. This essentially allows you get some of your sugars from mashing grains but still back it up with liquid or dried malt extract. Aside from allowing you to learn the brewing process in steps, it also allows you to upgrade your brewing system over time. Purchasing a complete all grain system can be expensive and if you’re just starting a new hobby it’s nice to spend as you go. However with systems like the RoboBrew/BrewZilla, getting started with all-grain brewing has never been more affordable and accessible.  When I started brewing these type of systems were not available though. Either way, most extract brewers move to all-grain brewing; as it allows you to take complete control over your beer recipe and intern the finished beer your making. Another topic worth mentioning is the social aspect of beer & brewing. We all know beer is a social drink, heck this country “The United States” was founded in pubs by revolutionary individuals. Sure it’s fun to sit back and enjoy a pint of a beer you made. But it’s even funnier to share a pint with friends and family. That leads to another great way to learn and improve your brewing, joining a homebrew club! For the first few years of my brewing career I brewed alone and only shared by creations with family and friends. It wasn’t until I was selling some homebrew equipment on the internet that I was directed towards joining a homebrew club. The person purchasing equipment from me asked if I was aware of the local homebrew club. It really never crossed my mind to seek out or join a club, but let me tell you; it was one of the best recommendations and things I could have ever done. Not only do you meet and network with likeminded brewers like yourself; the friendships that have come from the club have not only enriched my life it has my family as well. I know being social may not be for everyone, but meeting and speaking with other brewers is a great way to get More! out of an already amazing hobby! Regardless of your brewing path, be it extract or all grain or alone or with others; always remember to keep learning and have fun brewing, cheers!

BEER Collection Article +

What is Beer? Beer is a delicious alcoholic drink that is made by yeast, fermenting a malt sugar & water mixture that is typically flavored with hops. It has been brewed since the dawn of civilization, in fact, it’s even been credited for saving the world by some scientists and historians. The earliest evidence of beer production dates back to about 3500 BC. However, there is speculation that it was being produced as far back as 10,000 BC when humans first started farming malts. The ancient Sumerian text "The Hymn to Ninkasi" is a prayer but could also be considered the earliest written beer recipe. For thousands of years fermented malt beverages were being consumed by numerous civilizations, but none of them really resembled what we know as Beer today.  It wasn’t until 1516 AD in Bavaria when the Reinheitsgebot (Beer purity law) was adopted that it started to look, smell and taste like the alcoholic drink we all know and love today. The Reinheitsgebot is actually credited as the oldest food-quality regulation in history and is still in use to this day. It states that the only allowed ingredients in Beer are water, hops and malted barley.  Today, Beer is the third most popular drink in the world with only water and tea in front of it. Cheers to a long history, a bright future and another round of our favorite drink, BEER! Types of Beer One of the reasons it's is so popular is that there is literally something for everyone. Beer styles can range from sweet to bitter or even sour and everything in between. Beer is commonly categorized into two varieties: Ales and Lagers . An Ale is produced with a top fermenting yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This strain of yeast typically clumps together and rises towards the top of the fermenter. The recommended fermentation temperature range for ale yeast is between 15–25°C (59–77°F). Ale yeast is known for its higher ester production that is commonly described as “Fruity” and comes across as apple, pear, pineapple, etc. A Lager is cool fermented and produced with a bottom fermenting yeast called Saccharomyces pastorianus. This strain is typically fermented around 7–12°C (45–54°F) and then aged at even cooler temps for several weeks or up to several months. The original German word lager means “storehouse” representing this cold storage step, but now the term is synonymous with a beer style and not the literal interpretation. Less popular than the two previous styles, but none less delicious, is the Lambic styles of Belgium , also called “Wild” or “Mixed Fermentation” in regions outside of Belgium. These styles are fermented with a Saccharomyces strain of yeast as well as Bretttanomyces and Lactobacillus bacteria. This use of bacteria gives them a sour or “funky” taste. These three high level classifications are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to beer styles. In fact, there is an organization called the BJCP ( Beer Judge Certification Program ) that was founded in 1985 to encourage the knowledge and understanding of the world’s diverse styles. As of their last published style guidelines, there are 34 top level styles with over 100 substyles categorized. And with how popular craft beer has become lately, this list of recognized styles will only continue to grow. Making your own Beer If you found this page and read your way down to this section you obviously love and enjoy beer. In our experience one of the most enjoyable beer is the one you made yourself. Not only is it very rewarding and enjoyable it’s super easy to get started making your own beer at home . You can start with just a few pieces of brewing starter equipment and make amazing beer. Just as types can be boiled down (pun intended) to two high level classifications, so can brewing beer. These types are called Extract Brewing and All Grain Brewing . Extract brewing is what most home brewers start with due to it requiring less equipment and fewer process steps overall. With extract brewing you primarily just need a boil kettle and a fermenter . A majority of the malt sugars you will be fermenting come from an “Extract ”, LME ( Liquid Malt Extract ) or DME ( Dried Malt Extract ) hence the name. With all grain brewing you need a few more pieces of equipment as you will be creating your own malt sugars from scratch using crushed malted grains. In most traditional all grain brewing systems you have three vessels, a HLT (Hot Liquor Tank), MT (Mash Tun) , BK (Boil Kettle) and a Fermenter. There is also a hybrid approach called BIAB (Brew In A Bag) that allows you to perform an all-grain brew in a single vessel. With extract brewing, a typical brew day takes about 2-3 hours from start to finish, whereas all grain brewing typically takes about 4-6 hours. Both types of brewing can create amazing results and have different advantages to them. To learn More! about brewing in general click the Brewing button below.
