This new dual purpose hop was grown at Puterbaugh Farms in Washington. Tested by Dr. Shellhammer from OSU, he noted it as a very clean hop with a very orange, slight grapefruit, tropical pineapple, strawberry, and melon aroma. Give this hop a try in your next pale ale.

Bentolact S is a proprietary IOC blend of soluble casein and bentonite. It is most effective when used early (during cold settling). This fining agent is formulated for the preventative treatment of must prone to oxidation. It will help prevent the formation of undesirable off-characters. Using this with whites, roses, and light fruit wines will help prevent any negative characters from forming as a result of oxidation during processing.
Juice - Applied at a rate of 2.25 g / gal.
Wine - Applied at a rate of 6 g / gal.
Dissolve in 10 times its weight in cold water and mix vigorously to dissolve any clumps. Allow the mixture to stand for 3 hours. Add to the juice or wine during a pump-over or a good mixing. Depending upon the wine, a Bentolact S addition may take up to 7 days to settle.

Volclay KWK Krystal Klear Bentonite is a clay-like mineral with a negative charge that, similar to Sparkolloid, removes positively charged particles. It is most effective when the wine is at a warmer temperature, so we recommend using it for fining in late spring or early summer. It also works better at lower pH levels because proteins have a stronger positive charge in more acidic conditions. Generic Low-Level Fining for 5 Gallons: Blend 1/2 tsp (about 3g) of bentonite with 1/2 cup of hot water (140 to 200°F) in a blender for 1-2 minutes. Let the mixture sit for 60 minutes, then stir it well before adding it to the wine. Allow the wine to stand for 10-14 days before racking off. This method achieves a fining rate of 0.16g/L. Generic Mid-Level Fining: Follow the same steps as above but use 9 grams of bentonite and 3/4 cup of hot water. This method achieves a fining rate of 0.5g/L. More Scientific Approach: You can create a 5% bentonite stock solution and run bench trials to determine the lowest effective concentration for clearing the wine. Since fining is non-selective, it removes both undesirable particles like yeast and some desirable phenolic compounds. Therefore, it's best to use the lowest effective concentration. To make a 5% solution, dissolve 50 grams of bentonite in 850ml of hot water, mix thoroughly, and top up with water to a final volume of 1L. Set up trials with clear jars of equal volume, adding varying amounts of the solution to achieve addition rates between 0.3g/L and 2.0g/L. You’ll need to do some calculations to determine the right amount for your needs. Let the trials clear overnight. Fining with Wine Kits: When using a wine kit made from concentrate, bentonite is typically added on the first day for a few reasons. It serves as a nucleation site for CO2 removal. The CO2 movement helps distribute the bentonite throughout the wine, allowing you to use less and achieve effective fining in a shorter time.

BevBright's one micron filters are disposable, multi-zoned, cartridge style filters perfect for filtering beer with any standard 10" filter cartridge housing. BevBright achieves superior efficiency by being the first to spin different diameters of poly strands on the same filter core to create zones of filtration. The zone closest to the core contains consistent, tight fibers for final filtration while the final outer layer zone is spun with larger fibers for increased sediment holding capacity and increased flow capacity. The best of both worlds. By comparison typical spun poly water filters are spun with only one size of fiber. Note that these are True 10" Filter Cartridges that rely upon the housing being closed tightly in order to engage the Knife Seals & eliminate bypass. 1 Micron Filters Use a 1 micron filter for crystal clear filtration when your beer has already naturally settled out. Too many yeast cells in solution will quickly clog a 1 micron filter. Is your beer cloudy to the eye? Try a 3 micron or 5 micron filter. What Retention Efficiency rating should I choose? We suggest you start with the 98% Super High Efficiency rated filters and adjust from there. 90% High Efficiency - Removes 90% of the material 1 micron or larger in a single pass. 98% Super High Efficiency - Removes 98% of the material 1 micron or larger in a single pass. 99.8% Absolute Efficiency - Removes 99.8% of the material 1 micron or larger in a single pass. More Information on Efficiency Ratings The efficiency rating tells you what % of material, at the given micron rating, will be filtered out in a single pass. Cheaper spun poly water filters are never rated for efficiency because they only remove 60-80% of the material at a given micron rating in a single pass. BevBright offer three levels of efficiency to fit any brewers budget or need. The High Efficiency rated filters work better than any 1 micron rated hardware store spun poly filters . The BevBright 30" Sterile-Grade has a Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane. Sterile PES membranes have individual .45 holes that do not allow particulates larger than .45 micron to pass. PES Cartridges provide the ultimate biological barrier and should be used as the final sterile filtration as your beverage is in route to your final packaging.
A Polyethersulfone layer looks like white film with .45 holes that you cannot see. This film is then supported with a 100+ micron layer of PE on both sides to stability. This outer layer is what you see when you look at a filter. Our PES filters will not hold very much particulate, often called dirt in the filtering world, and will clog very quickly unless your wine is exceptionally clean.
For white wine, a very common usage, it is best to fine and/or filter the wine beforehand as applicable. On bottling day filter first with a pleated BevBright 1 micron filter and then this .45 Sterile PES Filter en route to the bottle.

What makes this filter really unique is the PES layer membrane with defined .45 micron hole size. This layer will not allow material to pass that is over .45 in size. This PES layer is also what makes this cartridge considerably more expensive than spun poly filters. Some cartridage filters are listed as being absolute but unless they have a PES layer they aren't.
Wine to be filtered should already be very clear as this filter will load up quickly with material. It is a common practice to prefilter already settled wine with a 1 micron spun poly filter and then filter with this .45 micron absolute filter.

A yeasty character is not uncommon, and is achieved by an extended period of contact with the yeast bed – some commercial breweries go for up to six weeks! This should be fermented at 64°F.

A clarifier that has received attention on The Brewing Network and is used by several of our commercial brewer friends. While beers cloud for different reasons and there is not one silver bullet to clear all beers, Biofine has proven effective in most situations.
