Keeping track of your water chemistry pays off with outstanding tasting beer!

If you have soft water and are brewing a hop forward beer, you’ll want some Gypsum on hand. Gypsum (calcium sulfate) is used to add permanent hardness to your brewing water in the form of calcium ions, which will increase the hop perception in your beer.

1 gram of Calcium Sulfate in 1 gallon of water changes the salt levels by 61.5 ppm calcium, 147.5 ppm sulfate and adds 153.5 ppm to the hardness.

Bought this with the LaMotte water test kit to boost sulfate for brewing IPA. A pound ought to be a lifetime supply for a homebrewer.

        Needs re-sealable bags

I have had to clip the bag shut, and then put inside another zip-lock bag. It would be nice if these came in re-sealable bags.

        Essential for Hop-Forward Beers

Want your IPA's and Pale Ales to shine? Give this stuff a try and it will really bring out the hops. Of course you should get your water tested before using it.

        necessary for IPAs

Depending on your city's water profile, this will most likely be needed to get more pop out of the hops you use and make an IPA taste not so flat.would prefer that the packaging was a tub and not a bag, though.

Adds a bright hop flavor to IPA

I add this to any beer I'm looking for a hop pop. If you havent experimented with gypsum in hoppy beers give it a try, the price is excellent on this product.

It works, not sure what else to say

Water treatments are one of those things that are easy to "over-engineer". I use EZ water and the Water book. Use it correctly, and it makes a 30pt. beer a 40pt. beer.

Great product at a great cost!

This is a great way to change your water chemistry to dial in site-specific brewing profiles. Gypsum (calcium sulfate) can increase the perceived bitterness of hops and would be an appropriate addition in hoppy, English styles.1lb will last for a while. I would gladly buy this again and recommend it to anyone looking to take their brewing practices to a new level of intricacy.

        Water adjustment

Part of the basic three additions I use to get the desired water I need. As others noted it can be used to bring out hoppiness.

Adding gypsum was a huge improvement

I've always heard that Chicago water was great for dark beers. While I had a general understanding of why, it never translated into adjusting the water for my light and hoppy beers. I finally broke down and decided to play around play with my water. There was a huge improvement in hop flavor. These water modifiers much more affordable compared to other items I have purchased for this hobby. Once you get the basics of your process, recipes and fermentation down, I highly recommend giving water modification a shot.

        A must have

If you want to notice your hops, you need this. Great for IPA's, Pale Ales, and any other style that hops flavor and bitterness is an aspect of. A simple way to make your beers brighter and bolder.

        IPA from RO, must have.

If you are brewing with an all-grain setup, water chemistry is a must. The brewing salts from More Beer do the job. If you are brewing a hop forward beer, this'll do the trick.

It's a lot of gypsum for a bargain price

Fun trick; sprinkle a little into your IPA glass to bring out the hops in your cold beer.

Works Good for stuck fermentation of meads

I put a little gypsum into my fermenter when I have a stuck fermentation of my meads it helps the fermentation process. Also good for letting the IBU's shine in IPA, Pales.

        Hoppy Beers? Getcha Some!

I made a lot of good beers before I used gypsum, but never a great IPA. You can tell a difference in the "crispness" of your hoppy beers when using this. Thanks MoreBeer!

        Water treatment 101- Gypsum

When I changed from extract to all grain my pale ales went from great to lame. They lacked hoppiness, the aroma was soapy, dull. Adding 4-8 grams to the brew (3-5g in the mash and a little in the boil) gave me back my hoppy-mojo.Even without analyzing a water report or understanding residual alkalinity, all-grain pale ales and IPAs benefit from gypsum in the mash. Extract brewers don't need to worry as much because the extract makers adjust the water for the mash, but if your beers lack the hop aroma and flavor you want, add more hops and a few grams of gypsum.

        IPA without gypsum, no way!

Professional brewers world wide add Gypsum to their beers to 'run up' the hop impact. It is said you simply can't make a great IPA without it. Many brewers use it in the range of 1-2 grams per gallon, but without it some have reported a 'soapy' tang from their hops. This is of course hop type or blend related to some degree. Try it and you be the judge... Cheers!
