If you are like us and most other brewers, you love hops! Hops bring great aroma and bitterness to balance the malt sweetness in our beers. That bitterness is measured in IBUs, which is the International Bitterness Units scale used to approximately quantify the bitterness of beer. There are several formulas for calculating IBUs; our calculator uses the trusted Tinseth formula.
How to Use the Calculator
- Unit: Select either US or Metric. The "US" option uses gallons for liquid volume and ounces for hop weight. The "Metric" option uses liters for liquid volume and grams for hop weight.
- Boil Volume: Enter your initial pre-boil volume.
- Final Volume: Enter your post-boil volume.
- Original Gravity: Enter your measured Original Gravity.
- Hop Additions: Please note our calculator supports up to six hop additions. For any of these six hop additions, you can select one from the list of common hops and it will auto-fill the estimated alpha acid. If you know the exact alpha acid for that hop, update that field to reflect the accurate number. Or, if the hop you are using is not listed, simply update the alpha acid to reflect its correct number. Then enter the weight and amount of time that hop addition was boiling for.
- Results: Click the "Go" button once you have filled in all applicable fields to see the results of your calculation.
