MoreBeer! & Galena - a little fun history Galena was the original bittering hop we used in most of our kits thought the 90's. We later switched to using Magnum but many of our original customers still really like this hop. Regan Dillon, MoreBeer!'s second customer and later partner, was a big champion of this variety through the 1980's and 1990's. Regan still loves this hop so if you happen to run into Regan at our Concord store or at a festival you can become instant friends by saying "Man, I don't know why Galena isn't used more!"   Typical usage: High Alpha hop Aroma: Mild citrus aroma Alpha acids: 13.0-15.0% Beta acids: 7.5-8.5% Cohumulone: 34-39% Total Oil: 1.3-2.1 ml/100g Myrcene: 40-50% Humulene: 11-17% Country of origin: USA

Beer Hops For Brewing Collection Article +

Leaf vs Pellet Hops Which hops to brew with in your upcoming batch of IPA can be a fun yet daunting choice with all the amazing brewing hops on the market today. Couple that with the choice of using either Pellet Hops or whole cone hops even furthers the decision tree or should I say bine. Don’t worry, we won’t let your thoughts boil over in the process. Ok enough with the puns, let’s hop (last one I swear) into the differences between hop pellets and whole hops. Whole Cone Hops Let’s start with whole hops also called “whole cone” or “whole leaf” as they are the first product in the refining process to making pellet hops. If you’re into purity and think less is more than you can’t get much less refined than whole cone hops with the exception of freshly harvested wet hops of course. Many commercial breweries like Sierra Nevada insist on only using whole hops in their beers. So there is something definitely to be said by this choice. But let’s explore further and looks at some of the advantages and disadvantages of using whole cone hops. Advantages: They retain more of their volatile oils due to less processing (Better aroma?) They do not break up into sludge in the kettle or fermenter (Easier to clean and less organic material in your wort or finished beer?) Disadvantages: They have slightly less utilization efficiency (10-15%) due to the lupulin glands not being finely ground. They are less compacted and take up more storage space They can be harder to fit into the small neck of carboys or small openings on conical fermenters They tend to float on the surface of wort/beer leading to less efficiency/extraction T-90 Hop Pellets Essentially T-90 Hops contain more overall vegetal matter due to how they are processed. Speaking of processing, that’s the big difference between whole and pellet hops. Pellet hops go through further processing after being harvested and dried. They get ground into a fine powder and then pushed through a heated extrusion die, turning them into a pellet. This refinement process creates some advantages and disadvantages over whole cone hops. Advantages Many more varietals available due to more brewers/breweries using them (You will see why as we continue) They oxidize slower and thus stay fresher longer They take up less storage space They are easier to pour into the small neck of carboys or small openings on conical fermenters They have slightly higher utilization efficiency (10-15%) due to the lupulin glands being ground. Disadvantages: They break up into sludge in the kettle or fermenter (Harder to clean and more organic material in your wort or finished beer?) They have less volatile oils due to more processing (Less aroma?) As you can see both pellet and whole hops have their advantages and disadvantages. I don’t think one could say “I only use…” type of hops. But it’s important to know the differences when crafting your beer recipe.

How should I store my hops? +

Store them in the freezer in their original oxygen barrier packaging. If you open the hops try to remove all air from the bag and store hop bag in zip lock back in the freezer. Other ways to store hops such as using vacuum sealers or vacuum jars are great but require the purchase of additional equipment and supplies.

Whats Difference Between Leaf Hops and Pellet Hops? +

Whole cone hops (also called whole leaf hops) are the dried cone flowers from the female hop plant. Pellet hops are the same flowers that have been ground up and pushed through a heated extrusion die, turning them into a pellet. To learn about the advantages and disadvantages of using whole leaf or pellet hops, click here .
