Kit - Jim Wagners Vanilla Oatmeal Stout (Mini Mash) KIT813
DuClaw Brewing Company has been a popular destination in the East Coast brewing scene ever since they opened their doors back in 1996. Things kept rolling along when Jim Wagner joined up in 1998. A homebrewer since the early 1990s, Jim never lost sight of his creativity, and is currently producing 5 Year-Round beers and an amazing 12 Seasonals. DuClaw has 4 restaurant locations and one brewhouse - a 40 BBL system located in Abindon, Maryland. Anyone who visits should be required to book-end the trip with visits to DuClaw - their beers are truly worth seeking out. Visit them in CyberSpace at www.DuClaw.com.
We got connected with Jim via White Labs, just before the National Homebrewers Conference in Baltimore, MD. Our idea was to have a beer there - brewed by a local brewery - to represent MoreBeer! and to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. Jim agreed to do something special for us that he has never done before, or will again. He took his famous Alchemy Oatmeal Stout and infused it with Vanilla. If that werent enough, he put the beer into two firkins and let us serve it at our booth from a hand pump! Beer Heaven! The beer was a hit at the show, with 22 gallons of it going in about 4 hours. Needless to say it was the favorite beer of the MoreBeer! booth that night ... This Oat stout is very rich and creamy, with a solid malt backbone. The vanilla is a great touch, and finds its way into the body of the beer - subtle and not over-powering, yet it will stay on the palate through the last drop. The hops are almost not even there - with only 1.25 ounces of Kent Goldings for a 60 min boil, which really keeps the emphasis on the malt and vanilla. If we had to go back in time and fine the perfect beer, this would make a great candidate!
