Kyle's Odoriferous Brown Holiday Brew - Extract KIT616
Last year we had a competition in our retail showrooms for the best Holiday Beer. The winner was unknown new brewer named Kyle Sommers. Since that time we actually hired Kyle (see where good homebrew will get you!) and now he works in our Customer Service center. So the next time you call in to place an order and Kyle answers the phone, say hello. But order soon, because in February of 2010 Kyle is off the Siebel Institute to continue his dream of becoming a professional Brewmaster. Make his beer before he gets famous!
We loved the big body, rich malt, and the extremely complex spice blend. When we went to make the recipe for sale we thought twice because we had to buy out the spice section of our local grocer.
Based on a Northern English style Brown Ale, it has 6 different spices added at two different times in the brewing and fermentation process, resembling and inspired by a Belgian-style winter beer. This winter warmer will make your kitchen smell like Thanksgiving Day at Grandma's house. With some added Belgian brown sugar to counter-balance the spice and add some alcohol content, this is a great way to top off your Holiday adventures by the fireside. If you are a firm believer in the Reinheitsgebot (no spices, sugar, etc.), this is not the beer for you!
We recommend brewing this beer early, as extra time in the bottle prior to consumption really helps blend the spice flavors, and will enhance the drinking experience. Kyle suggests using White Labs English Ale yeast, WLP002
Kyle says: "I started brewing two years ago with a kit from MoreBeer!, and it quickly became an obsession (second only to hockey, Go Sharks!), with most of my waking hours filled with day-dreams of pale ales and porters. I entered my first original recipe in the annual MoreBeer! Holiday Ale contest, and two days after a phone call telling me I had won the contest, they called back and asked if I wanted a job. Recently I applied to and was accepted for Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, which I will be attending in February."
Good Luck, Kyle!
