Description

We recently discovered this premium breathable silicone carboy hood and were immediately impressed with its robust design and features. To start with, the hood is designed to fit over the top of your carboy so you never have to worry about an airlock/stopper popping off of your carboy Where the hood really shines is in its two-piece design. When set to the open position, the bung acts as an airlock and allows the release of CO2 while maintaining a seal against oxygen coming in.? When fermentation is over and you no longer want the bung to "breathe" out, you just push the center cap into the bung to create a firm seal and the FE496 becomes a solid stopper!

The FE496 fits all of our glass carboys and our 5 gallon and 6 gallon "Better Bottles".

Solution for aging pseudo-lambic without constantly refilling liquid in traditional airlocks.

I like the fact that it fits over the top. They always want to ride up and slip out.

Best for sealing wine in carboy

Never tried one and it makes sense.

I have several carboys for holding reserve beer. These look like a better design than water airlocks/stoppers.

BEST ANSWER: If you are talking about plugging a five-gallon carboy, I strongly suggest you use the hood over the bung. I have used both. I have never had a single problem with one of the hoods. I use the bungs in my 1-gallon jugs from time to time, but I have experienced contaminated batches doing this. I can't say for sure the bung had anything to do with the contamination, but these have been the ONLY batches to ever become contaminated.
will these fit on the PET plastic carboys?
Sergio A Quevedo on Jun 8, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Any carboy that has a standard mouth, like a 5 gallon water cooler carboy or glass Italian carboys. Not the wide mouth ones. Also, If they are wet, it might be a good idea to tie a string around it, 'cause they can be slippery on glass when wet and try to slide off during first onset fermentation. Great product though.

great seal
These seal well around the top of glass carboys and do a good job of keeping out contaminates even when in the raised vent position. They seal very well when the vent is pushed in fully. I would highly recommend these for aging and long term storage.

Great carboy cap!
I've used hollow silicon plugs a few times for aging wine but always had to duct tape them in. These work great and are much easier to install with no worry about them coming off. The only drawback is that they don't work so well with the clamp on carboy handles; But, neither does my carboy drier. So, I no longer use those bottle top handles which weren't that great anyway.

Great for beer kegs holding wine!
These work splendidly on beer kegs (that I use for storing new wine) that have the Sankey mouth opening. Two-position for sealing or outgassing. No water required means no worries about a dry airlock.

Great For Secondary
Tried this on for primary several times with good results, however if you have a aggressive fermentation you might find your airlock accross the room. Not a big deal during primary since off gassing will keep O2 from entering. I primarily use this for secondary fermentation.

Useful Product
I have enjoyed using this carboy hood for the past two years. They seem to create a nice seal when used properly.

I typically give mine at least fifteen minutes after sanitizing before I put it on top of the carboy (either glass or plastic). I've only had issues with it popping off during the first day or two of primary IF and only IF it was put onto the carboy wet/foamy (I use StarSan).

Gas will escape on it's own, though not visibly as apparent as an airlock...you will definitely smell the fermentation happening. Also I will tap the vent piece from time to time (few times a day during the first few days of primary) to allow any extra gas to escape.

All in all, I do enjoy this product (I have three).

Cheers!

Too slippery for glass carboys
This product seemed intriguing, but is a bit too slippery for good results. I used it on 6.5 gallon glass carboys for three brews, and each 5-gallon batch blew this silicone cap right off. I ended up strapping these below the protrusion on the neck of the carboys with a velcro-type cable tamer, and had better results by batch three, but it popped off after three days of fermentation. Perhaps if the hood were a bit longer, or there was a more postive grip at the bottom of the cap in combination with some sort of strap to secure it, then this would be awesome and I'd throw out all my airlocks.

With these airlocks you have to unlock the center pin and let the weight of the pin rest on the opening. These airlocks can function as a plug as well as a blowoff. hope this helps.

Love these carboy hoods!
I love this carboy hoods. I use them whenever I can for the ease of use. I ferment in 6 gal Better Bottles so there isn't a lot of head room. I don't use this carboy hood on beers that I expect to ferment like crazy. But lagers and lower temp ales, I use these and love them. If Better Bottle made a larger carboy, I could use these all the time.

Not the best
It sounds good on paper but this carboy hood needs more pressure to relieve the co2 from fermentation than your typical blow off tube or bubbler. Which I've read isn't the best for yeast. And for $12 just go buy a handful bubblers or 15 feet of blow off hose and a carboy cap...
