Description

Getting a siphon started can be one of the biggest hassles that homebrewers face. There are endless methods you can try that usually end in a siphoning disaster. If this sounds familiar you will LOVE this Sterile Siphon Starter! No sucking the end of the tube, no plungers with faulty gaskets, no shaking, no filling up the tube with unsterilized water, nothing to break, no contamination, no disturbing the sediment, and no fuss!

Simply blow into the sterile filter, which slightly pressurizes the carboy, forcing beer to flow up the racking cane and out the tubing, thus starting your siphon. This is hands down superior to the numerous other methods of starting a siphon (and we have tried them all!)

This size will also work for larger-mouthed plastic carboys!

How to Use:  Attach the Sterile Siphon starter assembly by firmly pushing the carboy hood over the mouth of the carboy. Slide the stainless racking cane to the desired depth, just about the sediment level and blow into the white, sanitary air filter for 2-3 seconds until you have a solid flow of beer running out the tubing. There is no need to worry about contamination from your mouth, as the sanitary filter removes 99.98% of airborne bacteria.

Sterile Siphon Includes:
  • 26 inch Stainless Racking Cane
  • Red Sediment Reduction Tip
  • Rubber Carboy Blowoff Hood for 6.5 Gallon Carboy with threaded neck
  • 5' of 3/8" ID Vinyl Tubing
  • Stainless Hose Clamp
  • Sterile Air Filter

About the White Sterile Filter: There are two sides to the filter - an "in" and an "out". The direction you use doesn't matter, however, you want to take note of which way you first push air through it and always keep it that way. There is an arrow on the edge of the filter housing that we use to keep the airflow going one direction when using it. The filter should never get wet, so don't try and sanitize it by dunking it in sanitizer. If you want to clean the outside of it, use Alpet D2. To store the filter, use a little tinfoil on the ""In"" of the filter and store in a zip-lock bag.

STORE DRY AT ALL TIMES. DO NOT SANITIZE FILTER.

Note: The color of the hood you recieve may vary from the hood that is pictured.

Does it thread onto a Speidel fermenter?
Michael Mesaros on Feb 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Michael - This is not designed to work with the Speidel fermenters because it will not provide a good seal. The threaded glass carboy has a smooth upper lip where the orange hood can create a seal.

Totally unable to start siphon. Upon investigation it turned out that there was a leak where the tubing attaches to the cane. Tightening the screw on the clamp did not solve the problem.

You're crazy not to use this
This purchase is a no brainer. It's incredibly easy to transfer your beer to the bottling bucket or to secondary, without having to deal with getting a siphon going. Just blow in to the filter, let go of the pinch, and your beer is transferring. It's $20 well spent.

Works the best
Works like a charm. The extra tube on top is perfect for applying some CO2 gas to pressurize the inside and get the siphon flow going, without introducing oxygen in any way. Very easy to clean/sanitize.

I love this siphon
I have replaced my auto siphon with this. Easy to clean and sterilize in a wallpaper tray. No contamination. I find I need to hold the neck while starting the siphon, but once it is going it keeps the seal on its own.

Overall good method for transfering
In general this product works well, and seems like the easiest method to transfer beer with a siphon. The actual hood is a little loose when trying to build the pressure to start the siphon, but I find it easy enough to hold the hood tight until the siphon starts flowing.

Must have
For me, this was easier to use and clean than a auto siphon.

Easy to fill a keg or rack to secondary.
Just make sure you don't lose the siphon because getting it started again with so much liquid missing is hard work. I have attached my aquarium pump and it did the trick, though. Easier to clean than an auto-siphon, and stainless means I will have it a long time.

This works great!
I love this setup. It is easy to get the siphon started, sterile, and very gentle on the beer.
