Description

If you want to convert your 15.5 gallon keg into a mash tun, this conversion kit is a must have!

The Fermentap Weldless Mash Keg Conversion Kit is a great way to turn that 15.5 gallon keg you have into an efficient mash tun, or as an effective whole hop filter in your boil kettle! This kit features 100% stainless steel metal parts, and the gaskets used are made from high temp. and food-grade materials.

The ball valve is 1/2" Full Port, so your wort can flow through unrestricted, if you wish. The bulkhead used is our new Fermentap Bulkhead, which features 1/2" MPT on the outlet for direct connection of a ball valve, and 1/2" FPT on the inside for easy connection of a compression fitting! Behind that compression fitting is a stainless pick-up tube, which allows for the collection of the wort underneath the 10-inch diameter mash screen. This way, you get maximum yield from your mash tun!

Requires a 1" hole to install. Depending on your keg, height and diameter will vary. This is designed to work with the majority of kegs, however due to the number of different keg designs, we can not guarantee that this will sit flush or function perfectly with your keg.

Keg to Mash Tun Conversion
Carl H on Aug 28, 2019
Turning 15.5gal keg into mash tun. Product was reviewed well on website. Price is reasonable. I am concerned about how well the screen will seal with the keg bottom once the grain bed is set. I had previously used a rectangular cooler with slotted CPVC and mesh screen for my mash.

Great product
I love this product but make sure you check where you plan on drilling the hole for the bulk head (I learned that the hard way). Other than that its a solid product and works great.

Great for my keggles
I recently used these kits to make two keggles for my home brewing rig. They installed easily and they worked perfectly for both operation. I was very happy that they didn't leak. One of the kits did not have all the correct parts but MoreBeer quickly corrected the mistake and I have been generally very satisfied.

Not impressed
The screen is flat making it weak ie easy to bend. Using this in a 15.5 gallon keg for mash seemed scary as there is almost no room left between the screen and the keg bottom. I found out the hard way that having the o-ring under the screen is not a good idea. During my RIMS the o-ring was sucked up through the tube and stopped my chugger pump. I have found a domed screen with a stainless nut fitting to replace this screen. All other parts of this kit are great. I have used this kit in my boil kettle and it really does not do a very good job of filtering out pellet hops as they are to fine.

Great product, but installation issues
We bought two Stainless Weldless Mash Keg Conversion kits. One was not in stock at the Pennsylvania so More Beer shipped one to us from the California store. They expedited the shipping for free. That was a plus for us.

We were very pleased with More Beer?s customer service.
Installation of this kit was straightforward but there were a few problems. You definitely need a step bit to drill the holes out which are very expensive to use one time. To get to the one inch hole that is needed, step bits were around $49 - $59 depending on the manufacture. We were able to find a step bit at Harbor Freight for around $20.

Before drilling the hole, make sure to measure the height of the hole and pick a location on the keg that does not have the little drain holes right under the hole you are about to drill. (Fire or heat could come through the little hole and melt the gasket . . . you will see why later on in this review) Ensure the false bottom screen is flat on the bottom of the keg. Insert the tube and make sure you can put the black little rubber washer on the bottom side of the false bottom screen with the false bottom screen touching the bottom of the keg. This took us a minute to figure how to install. It is hard to get the rubber washer on the bottom of the tube when it is attached to the keg and false bottom.

If you drill the hole too high, your false bottom screen will not filter properly as it will be sitting too high. When the false bottom screen is sitting too high the black rubber washers are not strong enough to hold the false bottom screen in place and the false bottom screen will fall down with a little pressure (the weight of the grains). Be sure to accurately measure the height of the hole before you drill. Ok enough on that.

When you drill the one inch hole, go slow and don?t let the step bit heat up too much. On the last hole we drilled, total of three, the battery was dying on the drill, so we switched to an electric drill. The electric drill spun so much faster that keg was turning red from the heat. This made it that much harder to cut since the keg started to melt around the hole. Once the hole is drilled we attached everything and took it for a test to check for leaks. Putting the false bottom on was difficult. You have to turn the drain tube to the side to get the black rubber ring on under the false bottom.

The red gasket did not stop the water and the keg was leaking. The problem is that the keg is round and when you tighten the ball valve, the red gasket starts to turn. This causes the red gasket twist. Talking to a plumber at Home Depot, he told us that there should have been a plastic washer added to this. The plastic washer will be between the metal washer and the red gasket. The plastic washer will keep the red gasket from spinning. Every house is like this for the drain, where the drain connects to the sink. However, Home Depot does not sell plastic washers in one inch size. One suggestion was to use a plastic bottle and manufacture a plastic washer. (We were getting frustrated that we wasted our money on a kit that we have to add stuff to so it doesn?t leak)

Feeling defeated, we called More Beer and spoke to their technicians. Again they were great. It seemed like we had a whole team working on our issues. The final solution was to put the metal washer on the inside of the keg with the nut and the red gasket on the outside holding the ball lock in place. Do not move the ball lock when tightening; only twist the nut on the inside to make a tight seal. The red gasket will be depressed a little, but will not twist. Viola! No more leaks. We used one keg for the mash tun and one for the boil kettle. We were very happy with the results. We did have a few pieces of grain come out of the mash tun, but the false bottom worked great.

So after 3?_ hrs, knowing this information would have saved so much time. We know this is a lengthy review, but we wanted to share our experience and hopefully save people time and frustration. Even with all the problems and frustration, we are giving the Stainless Weldless Mash Keg Conversion Kit four stars. We will be purchasing these kits again to convert other kegs.

High quality
I enjoy the all inclusive kit with high quality parts. However I have yet to mash in this thing because I am worried that the false bottom will lift off the bottom and cause a stuck sparge during stirring. The little black rings that are supposed to hold the false bottom don't seem to be sufficient, does anyone else have a better solution I could add on to this so it doesn't lift up during stirring?
