This whirlpool weld works great! Our own Ryan Barto has been using this with great success since December of 2009. This works best when plumbed into a wort chiller that is used outside of the boil kettle. A counterflow or plate chiller work great. We weld in a special coupler that allows for a 90 degree elbow to be installed on the interior about halfway up the kettle wall. It will require the use of a pump. Ryan pumps out of the boil, through his counterflow and returns the boiling wort through the elbow. This sanitizes the chiller with boiling wort, as well as creating a constant stirring motion for the hops and trub to settle out. The key lies in the settling time. After flameout, turn the water on and chill to 180 degrees. Then you want to turn the pump off, and let the whirlpool settle for 20-30 minutes with the lid on. After the settling time, transfer out of the kettle, through your counterflow, and to the awaiting fermenter. Now, sit back and enjoy the glorious mound of hops and trub that are not being transferred into your fermenter!
