Description

Getting a siphon started can be one of the biggest hassles that homebrewers face. There are endless methods you can try that usually end in a siphoning disaster. If this sounds familiar you will LOVE this Sterile Siphon Starter! No sucking the end of the tube, no plungers with faulty gaskets, no shaking, no filling up the tube with unsterilized water, nothing to break, no contamination, no disturbing the sediment, and no fuss!

Simply blow into the sterile filter, which slightly pressurizes the carboy, forcing beer to flow up the racking cane and out the tubing, thus starting your siphon. This is hands down superior to the numerous other methods of starting a siphon (and we have tried them all!)

This size will also work for larger-mouthed plastic carboys!

How to Use:  Attach the Sterile Siphon starter assembly by firmly pushing the carboy hood over the mouth of the carboy. Slide the stainless racking cane to the desired depth, just about the sediment level and blow into the white, sanitary air filter for 2-3 seconds until you have a solid flow of beer running out the tubing. There is no need to worry about contamination from your mouth, as the sanitary filter removes 99.98% of airborne bacteria.

Sterile Siphon Includes:
  • 26 inch Stainless Racking Cane
  • Red Sediment Reduction Tip
  • Rubber Carboy Blowoff Hood w/White Caps (Fits 3, 5, 6, 6.5 Gallon smooth neck glass carboyssee R552 if you have the more common Italian 6.5 gallon carboy with threads)
  • 5' of 3/8" ID Vinyl Tubing
  • Stainless Hose Clamp
  • Sterile Air Filter

About the White Sterile Filter: There are two sides to the filter - an "in" and an "out". The direction you use doesn't matter, however, you want to take note of which way you first push air through it and always keep it that way. There is an arrow on the edge of the filter housing that we use to keep the airflow going one direction when using it. The filter should never get wet, so don't try and sanitize it by dunking it in sanitizer. If you want to clean the outside of it, use Alpet D2. To store the filter, use a little tinfoil on the ""In"" of the filter and store in a zip-lock bag.

STORE DRY AT ALL TIMES. DO NOT SANITIZE FILTER.

I would really like to stop buying plastic. I still use a couple glass carboys and this looks like a lot less plastic and also looks a lot less easier. As I only use primary fermentation, it is a huge benefit for limiting the amount of beer that is stirred up during transfer to the keg

Will this fit a wine bottle opening (3/4 inch)?
Frank Di Lisio on Nov 12, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Well the outside diameter of the metal siphon is approx. 3/8 of an inch., so not a problem. Having said that , I don’t have that orange thing at the end of the siphon tube (maybe I did but lost it) so not sure that would fit than.
Will this fit a wine bottle opening (3/4 inch)?
Frank Di Lisio on Nov 12, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The cap will go over it but will not seal. Kind of like putting a 1” socket over a 1/2” nut. It will cover the nut but otherwise useless.
How do I attach this to a keg?
Tanner T McAllister on Oct 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: To connect the tubing to the keg you will need a 5/16" or larger tailpiece or barb that connects to the keg. Otherwise you can use a tubing splicer (D1880) that reduces the 3/8" tubing to 3/16" that will be compatible with 1/4" Keg fittings.

Good package but poor fitting cap
The stainless racking cane seems solid and this package was $10 cheaper than the cane alone at my LHBS. I don’t plan to use the sterile filter but instead I rigged up a Co2 connection on the cap and reduced the 3/8 ID line to 3/16 ID to end with a liquid ball lock disconnect for closed keg transfers. During the first transfer I found the cap doesn’t seal well on my 6.5 gallon carboy. I had to really squeeze it tight around the bottom to build up enough counter pressure to push liquid up and out of the cane. I had a constant flow of Co2 at 2 psi and it was tough to get started so I imagine trying to build up enough pressure only by blowing in the filter while also squeezing the cap seal wouldn’t be easy. I am going to try using a worm drive clamp to keep the cap sealed next time. Even considering the poor fitting cap this was a good package for me for the price.

Sterile Syphon Starter wand review
Excellent, nothing like it even close on the market. The plastic junkie ones are going into the garbage ?? or recycled into something else.
Two recent cases of Triple Blueberry ?? Mead. The stainless steel syphon made it a happily breeze
I really like the fact that it works perfectly in the fermentation bucket. little unwanted sediment.

Sadly it doesn’t work As advertised or as seen on YouTube videos. Takes way more effort then what’s implied and the hose is kinked and not practical to the application...

Sweet!
This thing works great! I was afraid of how complex it looked that it just wouldn't work that great. It took maybe 5-6 minutes to drain a 5 gal carboy. Being stainless makes cleanup and durability even better. I had a pump/manual type siphon that came with my kit and it just never worked very well. Just a word of advice: use a sharpie to mark what end you blow through on the little filter so you don't contaminate the beer side.

Works Perfectly
Great way to transfer from my carboy to keg. Reduces oxidation risks. Now I need to find other caps so I can transfer from different fermenters.

One star for incorrect fit
Left a review on the orange carboy cap independently but I ordered this as well so it warrants a review. The orange carboy caps DO NOT FIT 6.5GAL GLASS CARBOYS! You need a blue carboy cap and morebeer does not have them listed. You can still buy this if you have extra blue carboy caps and it should work but giving 1 star because it clearly says it fits 6.5gal carboys. I now have to go to my LHBS 50 mins away to get a blue cap to use this.

Not a good siphon starter
The orange lid leaks a lot of air and I always have to hold it tight with one hand. If it loses any pressure the flow really slows down and even stops so I always have to be blowing. It is hard to get it to actually stay consistently flowing. In the few times I have gotten it, the hose diameter is too small and racking carboys is painfully slow. And the included hose is too short.
